The Natural World

4 concerts of new electronic music in 4 churches

Given by the Electro-acoustic Ensemble – music by Nigel Bartram, Karen Tanaka, Jean-Claude Risset and John Stead

This event is now closed, follow the link below to view the gallery

About the programme:

All the pieces in the concerts, have a profound connection with nature – from the vibration in the strings of a ‘cello in Karen Tanaka’s ‘Song of Songs’ for live ‘cello and electronics, to sounds of water, air, birds, spaces and wood – looking at the music of nature through the prism of electronics in John Stead’s ‘Garden of Delights’. There is a rare performance of ‘Elementa’ by Jean-Claude Risset which is a classic in the genre of acousmatic music – here the sounds of water, air, earth and fire are magnified and transformed into new instruments, whose characteristics unfold throughout this magnificent piece. Nigel Bartram’s film-sound piece ‘Colours at Dawn’ delicately blends carefully transformed and spatialised sounds, of piano, ‘cello, birdsong and water, over the surround-sound system, whilst John Stead’s ‘Chikhai bardo’ and ‘Sidpa bardo’ extends and transforms many everyday sounds into powerful dream-like atmospheres with new and unusual sounds moving throughout the church.

(Note: The pricing reflects the very difficult financial times we are in at the moment. We felt that for less than the price of a cup of coffee, anyone receiving benefits could come to listen to a choice of either half of the concert. Since our founding concert in 1988, our policy has always been to bring high quality contemporary music to as wide an audience as possible, we hope that this pricing may help toward that aim, as well as supporting the wonderful churches we are performing in).
