We are especially delighted to invite the distinguished Anglo-Hungarian composer, pianist and performer Simon-Mary Vincent, who is performing two of her works, for electronics and piano and electronics.

Nigel Bartram writes: 

Arvo Part wants the performer to have something to say and strive for purity and innocence when playing ‘Spiegel im Spiegel’. The piece also requires steady bowing and a consistent tone all of which I am finding an enjoyable challenge. Our performance will place the ‘cello in the centre with a prerecorded piano on surrounding speakers which offers an innovative approach to the performance of this meditative composition. 

I am also performing two contrasting piano pieces by myself and Simon-Mary Vincent. Her ‘Three Green Hills pieces’ challenge the pianist to succinctly convey spontaneity and establish effective contrasting moods with precision. My own piece ‘Warter Walks’ hopefully will convey my sense of joy when walking in the peaceful Yorkshire Wolds, recalling associated sounds and sensations. 

Simon-Mary Vincent writes: 

REALM (1998) for Electroacoustic Playback 

REALM is a 2-channel electroacoustic work composed almost entirely using small grains of sound. These grains are continually expanded and contracted to create materials ranging from detailed percussive flurries to vast clouds which collide and convolve with one another. 

The result is a dramatic sound-scape that guides the listener into a lost, and unexpected, “realm”. 

LA MIA COPPA TRABOCCA (2016) for Piano & 2-channel Electroacoustic Playback 

LA MIA COPPA TRABOCCA was commissioned by Rev. Ulrike Eichler of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Trieste, and takes the concept of water as its central and guiding theme. Inspired by the location of the city of Trieste and Psalm 23, this theme is used to allude to ideas not only of nourishment and cleansing, but also the power of unconditional love. 

LA MIA COPPA TRABOCCA refers to Verse 5 of the Psalm, “My Cup Runneth Over”, which here is interpreted as a direct reference to an overflowing love for humanity. 

John Stead writes: 

World Music Day celebrates music in all its forms and the importance of music in peoples lives. It began in France in 1982 and now more than 120 countries and over 700 cities across the world see a variety of free public concerts being held throughout the day. 

My offerings for the concert consist of contemplative works reflecting nature and spirituality. At the request of Nigel Bartram, three of my natural histories are included; Particles, l’esprit de rocher and Wast. I am also diffusing Bardo Visions, a large and powerful work based in Tibetan Buddhism, concerned with the intermediate state between death and rebirth. All these pieces are acousmatic – relayed through a large octophonic system, surrounding the audience. 

The concert consists of Spiegel im Spiegel for piano and ‘cello by the Estonian composer Arvo Part, Elementa by the French composer Jean- Claude Rissett, works by Anglo-Hungarian composer Simon-Mary Vincent, Warter Walks by Nigel Bartram and Natural Histories and Bardo Visions by John Stead.
