08 Mar St. Columba’s Church Concert
… apropos the private preview invitation concert – this will be held at St. Columba’s, Laburnum Ave, Garden Village, Hull on Friday 26th. November 2021 – doors open at 7.00 – begins at 7.30.

The programme opens with ‘Moments in Time’ by John Stead, commissioned for the Open Bridges Hull project in 2017 (the associated film will be shown at the Holderness performances ), followed by ‘Colours at Dawn’ (2020) by Nigel Bartram – again a piece with an associated film, but here played acousmatically over the loudspeakers.
A short 20 min interval and then a performance of ‘Song of Songs’ by Karen Tanaka. This is for solo ‘cello, pre-recorded sound and live electronics. Here the ‘cello and recorded sound are blended, amplified and placed in a 4.5 second reverberant environment – you can see how the acoustic of the church has to be taken into account! Finally a large work lasting just over 50 minutes – ‘Bardo Visions’ (2018 – 20). This is an acousmatic work diffused over the sound system and as in ‘Moments in Time’, the language is ‘musique concrete’, which very suitably lends itself to act as symbol and metaphor in this meditation on the bardo.
